St. Anton dominates the world famous Arlberg ski area. St. Anton is located at the western tip of Austria. This area is popular with those skiers in the know and skiers from all walks of life. While the resort is located in a small, quiet village, the nightlife is just the opposite.
The town is centered around a pedestrian street with lively bars and restaurants. The atmosphere here is young. The village is in the shadow of Mt Valluga which can be reached by cable cars. St. Anton is a superb ski destination for intermediate and advanced skiers. There are more runs here for advanced skiers than you will find in other resorts.
General Information
St. Anton is called “the birthplace of skiing” in these parts, because it was the first club of its kind that was organized at the turn of the century. The resort itself is basically a quiet and peaceful area located in a small village center during the day. At night, it is a different story. Things come alive when the sun goes down and you'll find the people are cool and relaxed.
Skiing/Snowboarding
St. Anton has 165 of prepared trails and another 125 miles of open, unprotected trails. Beginners may not have the best time here, but there are some trails for beginners. Advanced skiers will find the most trails geared to them while intermediate skiers will have just as good a time.
Twenty-five percent of the trails here are geared toward beginners. Most of these trails are found at the bottom of the hill and may not have the best snow. Another twenty-five percent of the trails are rated intermediate. The best intermediate trails are found at Rendl and Valluga. These peaks also have snowmaking equipment to make sure there's always skiing.
Fifty percent of the trails at St. Anton are rated advanced. There is some excellent off-piste opportunities with superb moguls and jumps. Some of the advanced runs have a vertical decent of about 40 percent.
Snowboarding is found everywhere here, but it's not as visible as you might think. Since most of the boarders here are serious, they hang out on the back trail powder runs and are out of sight. Recently, a new snowboard park was built with a half-pipe, high jumps, and a quarter-pipe.
Night skiing and heliskiing are not available at St. Anton. There are approximately 26 miles of cross-country skiing trails here. These trails are usually found near the resort areas. There is no snowmobiling available here either. Ice climbing is only found through local private organizations and clubs.
Children's Ski and Winter Activities
St. Anton is very kid-friendly. You'll find that there are plenty of daycare and children's activities. Most daycares are at the hotels, but the Kinderwelt Day-care Center accepts most children from age two-and-a-half. Children under the age of nine ski for free and those under 16 can buy a pass with a 50 percent discount.
Apres-Ski
The apres-ski in St. Anton is some of the best in the world. Most people start in the on-slope bars before heading back into the town for dinner. There is a good variety of restaurants in St. Anton that range from five-star down to fast food. There are about 60 different cafes and restaurants. St. Anton has many lively bars and discos. If partying the night away is not your desire, you can try some of the more sedate bars at the hotels.
Attractions
St. Anton has many attractions that are considered must-sees. You can visit one of the inspiring churches of Saint Antonius of Church of the Saint Jakobus which are open during the day.
Day trips can be planned to such cities as Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Munich with daily sightseeing buses always available. Lech and Stuben are both only an hour bus or train hop away.
Lift Facilities
St. Anton has 92 lifts consisting of eight trams, 12 chairs, and 72 surface lifts. The cable cars of Galzig and Valluga will afford some of the most beautiful scenery at an incredible 9,200 foot altitude. The lift system here allows 29,000 skiers uphill per hour.
Lift Tickets
The Arlberg Ski Pass covers the resort of St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, and Zurs. There is also the Arlberg Special Rate Ski Pass that offers the same resorts as above at a discounted rate for stays of over six days.
There are individual resort passes for full-day, half-day, and multi-day stays. These passes also include the free shuttle bus to and from the ski areas.
Snow Conditions
Winter finds generally good snow conditions at St. Anton with snowfalls of an average of four to five feet. If there is a lack of snow, over 13 miles of trails use 50 snowmakers to cover for it.
Snow can be found in St. Anton from fall to spring with base snow ranging from 30 inches in fall to 38 inches in spring.
Travel Time
The nearest airport to St. Anton is Innsbruck which is 60 miles away. Munich and Zurich are both 124 miles away. While driving is possible through various small towns, the train is usually the best bet to arrive in St. Anton. The train station is in the center of town and multiple international trains stop here regularly.
